Verdict

David Lloyd's own club finder says it has 139 clubs across Europe. What makes its membership terms worth reading is that they are specific: annual fee increases are capped in the contract at the higher of 1% above inflation or 3%, and if they exceed that cap you can leave. Suspension is not free - it costs 25% of the monthly fee for adults and nothing for children. We have not visited any club, and we do not publish membership prices here, because the terms tell you to get them from your club rather than publish them centrally.

Market Position

Company-reported 'We have 139 Clubs across Europe', on David Lloyd's own club finder page, retrieved 4 October 2026. It operates separate national sites for the United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, France and Germany. Prices are not published centrally: the membership terms say of the joining charges 'You can get details of these charges from your club', so we cannot place the brand on a price tier or compare it to another chain on price.

What Distinguishes This Brand

What we can actually document is contractual rather than experiential, and for a membership decision that is the more useful half. A written cap on the annual increase with an exit right attached, defined hardship exits, a published suspension price of 25% of the monthly fee, and a 14-day cooling-off are all things you can hold the company to. What we cannot document is the part the marketing leads with: our previous version of this page claimed a proprietary scheduling algorithm reserving 60% of prime-hour slots and being the only major chain to legally guarantee court time, and asserted European leadership, 85% retention and 70% class fill. We found none of it on any David Lloyd page, so we are not repeating it. We have also not visited any club, and we did not test the scheduling, the coaching or the facilities.

Strategic Strengths

  • The annual fee increase is capped in the contract, with an exit attached. Section A18: 'We may increase membership fees automatically each year by up to either 1% above the rate of inflation or 3%, whichever is higher.' Section A15.2 then gives you a way out: 'you can end your membership if we give you notice ... of an increase in your membership fee of more than either 1% above the rate of inflation or 3%, whichever is higher.' A cap you can act on is more useful than a promise that prices will stay low.
  • Hardship exits are contractually defined rather than discretionary. Section A15.1 lets you end the membership 'at any time' if you are suffering from a medical condition that means you cannot use the club's sports facilities, if you lose your employment or are declared insolvent, if you are relocated in your employment, or if you move home. The terms are unusually precise about one exclusion: the medical suspension 'does not include pregnancy, but does include a medical condition that arises during pregnancy'.
  • Suspension has a published price: 25% of the monthly fee for adults, and nothing at all for a child membership. The terms state 'Throughout the time any adult membership is suspended, we will charge you 25% of the relevant monthly fee for each month the membership is suspended. There will be no monthly fee for a child membership throughout the time it is suspended.' Evidence is required, and membership restarts automatically at the end of the suspension.
  • There is a 14-day cooling-off on the whole membership. Under the starting-your-membership section you 'can do this at any time up to 14 days after making your membership application and your entire membership will end', and if you used the club in that window 'we will charge a proportion of the monthly fee to cover this period and we will refund the balance of any fees you have already paid'.

Operational Risks & Limitations

  • Cancelling your direct debit does not cancel your membership. The terms say so directly: 'Cancelling your direct debit does not mean you have given us notice to end your membership. You must give us written notice in line with A2 Notice.' This is the single most expensive misunderstanding available on this page, because the minimum commitment runs for 12 calendar months regardless.
  • The notice clock starts on the first day of the following month, and you pay one more payment. The terms give their own worked example: 'if you need to give us one month's notice to end your membership and we receive your notice on 23 May, your notice will start from 1 June, it will run out on 30 June, your membership will end on 30 June and you will pay one more direct debit (on 1 June) after giving notice.' Because membership is calculated in whole calendar months, notice given late in a month costs a full extra payment.
  • Standard Annual and Standard Monthly commit you to twelve months. The terms state your 'minimum commitment is to pay for the first 12 full calendar months of your membership with us' and that this 'applies even if you have Standard Monthly membership and cancel your direct debit before then'. Flexible membership is the shorter commitment: its initial period 'is at least three months' and it then 'will continue then indefinitely until you give at least one full calendar month's notice in writing'.
  • You can be moved to the club you use most, at a higher price. To use other David Lloyd clubs, 'at least 50% (half) of your visits each month (over a three-month period) must be to your home club. If you use other clubs more than your home club, we have the right to transfer you to the club you use the most. This may mean you have to pay higher membership fees.' During the initial period a club transfer is allowed only if you are relocated in your employment or move home more than 10 miles away.
  • The joining charges are not published and joining fees are not refunded. The terms say 'You will need to pay an administration fee when you join. You can get details of these charges from your club' and separately 'We will not refund any joining fees you have already paid.' Late payment has published penalties: 'If you fall behind with your membership payments for more than 30 days, we will charge you an administration fee of 75 pounds. We will also charge an administration fee of 10 pounds each missed payment.'

Risk Assessment

The exposure here is timing, not quality. A Standard membership runs a 12-month minimum commitment, notice is counted in whole calendar months, and the clock does not start until the first of the following month - so a member who decides in good faith can still owe one more direct debit after a full extra calendar month of time. The fee-increase cap is real but it is the higher of CPI plus 1% or 3%, so in a high-inflation year the ceiling is above 3%. Club closure is handled with what the terms call reasonable efforts to give 'at least three months' notice of the change or closure (either in writing or by displaying a sign on the noticeboard in your club)', and even then you must still serve one calendar month's notice on Flexible or three on Standard. What we cannot assess: current club-level prices, retention, class utilisation, or margins. Our previous draft asserted 85% retention, 70% class fill, an eight-thousand-pound lifetime value, four-year average tenure, sub-2% same-store growth and EBITDA erosion of 3-5% a year, plus a claim that this is the only major chain legally guaranteeing court time. None of those figures appears on any David Lloyd page we retrieved, so they have been removed rather than softened.

Buyer Recommendation

If you are inside the first 14 days, use the cooling-off before you sign anything. If you are past that, choose Flexible membership over Standard if you might move, change job or lose employment - the initial commitment drops from twelve calendar months to three, and the exit notice drops to one calendar month. Send your notice in writing in the first week of a month rather than the last, because of the first-of-the-following-month rule. Ask your club for the administration fee and the joining fee in writing before you apply, because the terms do not publish either amount and joining fees are not refunded.

Best For

  • Anyone who will use the 14-day cooling-off rather than deciding on the first visit
  • Buyers who want the annual fee increase cap written into the contract instead of promised in a brochure
  • Families who need a documented medical or hardship exit route rather than a discretionary one

Ideal Buyer Profile

  • People who expect to stay in one place for at least a year and can live with a notice period counted in whole calendar months
  • Buyers willing to choose Flexible membership specifically to shorten the initial commitment from twelve months to three
  • Anyone who asks their club for the administration fee and joining fee in writing before applying, because neither is published centrally

Not Recommended For

  • Anyone who expects to stop paying by cancelling a direct debit - the terms state that this does not end the membership
  • Buyers who want a published national price list; the terms direct you to your own club for the charges, so the price you are quoted may not match another branch
  • Members who use other David Lloyd clubs more than half their visits and object to being transferred to the club they use most, potentially at a higher price

Competitive Positioning

We are not going to rank David Lloyd against other chains on price, retention or class popularity. The membership terms point you to your own club for charges, and we found no published retention or utilisation figures, so a comparison would be a comparison of things neither side has published. What is checkable, and unusual enough to be worth knowing: 139 clubs across Europe by the company's own count, an annual increase ceiling of the higher of CPI plus 1% or 3% with a contractual exit if it is breached, a 14-day cooling-off, suspension priced at 25% of the monthly fee, and defined exits for medical conditions, job loss, insolvency, relocation and moving home. Earlier drafts of this page compared the brand to boutique and budget operators on price and asserted that the under-30 boutique segment could not replicate its model; we have no data for either side of that comparison, so it has been removed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much notice do I need to give to end a David Lloyd membership?

One calendar month on written notice if you are on Flexible membership, three calendar months if you are on Standard Annual or Standard Monthly. The part that catches people out is how the clock is counted. The terms say membership is calculated in whole calendar months and that where one calendar month or more of notice is required, notice given during a month is treated as received on the first day of the following month. Their own example: notice received on 23 May starts on 1 June, runs out on 30 June, ends the membership on 30 June, and 'you will pay one more direct debit (on 1 June) after giving notice'. What happens if I just cancel my direct debit at David Lloyd?

Your membership continues. The terms state it directly: 'Cancelling your direct debit does not mean you have given us notice to end your membership. You must give us written notice in line with A2 Notice.' On Standard Annual and Standard Monthly you are committed to the first 12 full calendar months, and the terms add that this 'applies even if you have Standard Monthly membership and cancel your direct debit before then'. If you fall more than 30 days behind, an administration fee of 75 pounds applies plus 10 pounds for each missed payment, and unpaid amounts may be passed to a debt collection agency. Source: davidlloyd.co.uk membership terms and conditions, sections A4 and the late-payment section, retrieved 4 October 2026.

Can David Lloyd increase my membership fees every year?

Yes, but the terms put a ceiling on it. Section A18: 'We may increase membership fees automatically each year by up to either 1% above the rate of inflation or 3%, whichever is higher.' And if they go beyond that, section A15.2 gives you an exit: 'you can end your membership if we give you notice ... of an increase in your membership fee of more than either 1% above the rate of inflation or 3%, whichever is higher.' Note that 'whichever is higher' means the ceiling sits above 3% when inflation is running higher than 2%. What does it cost to suspend a David Lloyd membership?

For an adult membership, 25% of the relevant monthly fee for each month of the suspension - not free. For a child membership there is no monthly fee during the suspension. The terms also set out who qualifies: 'You can suspend your membership if you are suffering from a medical condition which means you are unable to use your club's sports facilities (this does not include pregnancy, but does include a medical condition that arises during pregnancy). You must give us suitable evidence.' The suspension takes effect from the first day of the month after the evidence is accepted, and the membership restarts automatically at the end of it. How much does a David Lloyd membership cost?

We cannot give you a figure, and we are not going to estimate one. David Lloyd does not publish its charges centrally: the membership terms say of the administration fee charged when you join, 'You can get details of these charges from your club', and note only that a joining fee 'may' apply depending on the club. So the price depends on which club you join and cannot be checked centrally. Our previous version of this page quoted a range of 119 to 199 pounds a month and an initiation fee of 50 to 150 pounds; we could not find either figure in any David Lloyd document, and both have been removed. What is published centrally is the club count - 'We have 139 Clubs across Europe' - and the fee-increase cap described above. Assembled from our structured brand record.

A small team cannot hand-write a page for every brand we track, so this one is generated from the same record the scores come from. It summarises that record and reports nothing we measured.

✓ Strategic Strengths

  • We hold no sourced strengths list for this brand. This is a gap in our record, not a finding: the strengths of a brand that publishes no specification sheet, no warranty schedule and no price list cannot be asserted from a record we do not have.

! Operational Risks

  • We hold no sourced risks list for this brand. We have not audited it, so we are not going to report that we found nothing: an empty record is not a clean result.
