Life Time

Life Time calls what it runs “Athletic Country Clubs”, its own term, and publishes one national guest and club policy alongside it. The two documents do different jobs: the policy is national and sets the membership rules, while the dues and the initiation fee for the club you join are set locally, and neither the brand nor we publish a price list. The locations page also lists entries that are not all clubs — Life Time Work, Life Time Living, a Swim location, entries flagged as arriving in 2027, and some carrying an age qualifier such as “Ages 12+” in the entry name — so a location total cannot be derived from it.

The homepage publishes “over 190 Athletic Country Club locations across the nation”. Read that as Athletic Country Club locations, not as every Life Time entry.

What matters when choosing Life Time

Cancellation for convenience is thirty days’ notice, with one carve-out. The policy reads “you may cancel for convenience by providing thirty (30) days’ notice through a method provided in your fitness service contract for all clubs except Minnesota”. Two things in that sentence matter: the method is defined by your own contract rather than by the policy, and Minnesota is excluded.

Three states get rights the national policy does not give. Minnesota’s route is effective immediately and may be taken in person, by telephone, by written notice, by email, by online message, or through a statutory termination election — the policy names “Minnesota Statutes, section 325G.60”. Connecticut carries a three-business-day right to cancel by written notice. California’s rule is flat: “The club may not impose a termination fee or any other liability on you for termination.” A comparison that lists one cancellation fee per brand with no state column gets this wrong in a way a reader cannot detect.

It does not transfer, and resident memberships cannot be shared. “All Memberships are non-transferable and resident memberships may not be shared.”

Leaving because you moved away is documented, but the distance is 25 miles and it is tied to the seller’s clubs. The relocation right applies where you move “further than twenty-five miles from any health club operated by the seller or from any other substantially similar health club which would accept the obligation of the seller” — not simply because you left town.

A medical or military freeze is capped at ninety days. “Life Time will freeze the portion of your membership affected by a medical or military situation for up to 90 days.”

The programme list uses brand names rather than gym-generic ones. The homepage names CTR — “Core, Tone, Reform (CTR), a reformer-based workout designed to build strength, tone your core, and develop power from the inside out” — and “Active Metabolic Assessment, Miora, and the LT App”. Hydrotherapy is listed among amenities, and the navigation carries Coworking and Residences. On pickleball the brand states “More courts than anyone.” That is their claim, not ours, and there is no data here to test it.

Before you join

• Read your own fitness service contract, not the policy page: the cancellation method you must use is defined there.
• Ask whether a termination fee applies in your state before you assume none does — Minnesota, Connecticut and California each work differently.
• Ask the club for the initiation fee and the monthly dues separately, in writing, and get the Annual Fee position in the same answer.
• If you are buying for a household, ask what a resident membership adds and what it cannot be shared for.
