Asset Performance Matrix
We do not hold per-dimension scores for Nuffield Health. Every dimension reads the same number in our records, which means the value was never assessed rather than that all six came out equal, so we show nothing rather than a number we cannot stand behind.
Verdict
Nuffield Health publishes an unusually complete set of membership terms for a UK chain, and we read the actual contract rather than the marketing page. The Fitness & Wellbeing contract (section 11) gives a one-full-calendar-month notice period, gives you nine specific grounds for cancelling inside a commitment period, and lets you transfer your membership and change your home centre at any time without paying another activation fee (section 9). That is genuinely better than most gym contracts we have read. Against that: the discounted tiers lock you into twelve full calendar months (section 6.3.3 and 6.3.4) and you can only leave early by paying off the remaining months, prices are set per club and are not published on any page we could reach, and the same document that gives you those rights also reserves Nuffield the right to cancel you without notice and bar you from every centre forever if you let someone else use your membership card, or if you coach anyone inside a Nuffield building (sections 13.2.3 and 13.2.5). We have never trained at a Nuffield centre and we hold no utilisation, retention or class-fill data, so we give no verdict on how busy the clubs are or how long members stay. What we can tell you is what the contract says.
Market Position
UK health-and-wellbeing operator whose gyms are attached to a wider private healthcare and physiotherapy business. Its own contract confirms the membership side sits inside a much larger health organisation: they may assign your agreement to another company provided your rights are not reduced (section 18), the 24/7 virtual gym has its own separate terms document, and the site also sells physiotherapy, consultant, hospital and news services. The gyms are branded Fitness & Wellbeing Centres. Counted from the club URLs in their own sitemap on 5 October 2026, there are 126 of them.
What Distinguishes This Brand
What distinguishes Nuffield Health is that it is a gym operation attached to a private healthcare business rather than a gym that diversified into wellness. Its own terms reflect that. The contract can end a membership immediately and refund the remaining commitment period on receipt of a formal notification of death (13.5), and it offers an on-site childcare nursery from three months old plus physiotherapy services whose expert sessions stay available even to someone who has frozen their membership because of a serious injury (10.9). Against that, the structure that makes the contract unusually good is the same one that makes the operator unusually powerful: the club holds an unfettered discretion to refuse membership without giving a reason (15.1) and a permanent ban for anyone it terminates (13.3). We could not verify a single membership price, so the value proposition cannot be tested against any competitor from the evidence available.
Strategic Strengths
- The notice period is one full calendar month, stated in those words in the contract and repeated on their Fair and Honest Contract page: "A calendar month's notice is required to cancel memberships." Their terms then spell out exactly how the month is counted, which very few UK operators do: notice received on the first day of a month ends the membership on the last day of that same month; notice received after the first day ends it on the last day of the following month, which means one more direct debit is taken. Their worked example is "if we receive your notice on 10 May, cancellation will take effect from 30 June."
- Nine specific grounds allow you to cancel inside a twelve-month commitment period, listed as 11.3.1 to 11.3.9: pregnancy, serious illness, serious injury, moving more than five miles from any Nuffield centre, redundancy, an employer relocating your workplace more than five miles away, Nuffield permanently closing your home centre, Nuffield refurbishing your centre closed for more than a month, and Nuffield significantly reducing your centre's opening hours or facilities. Proof may be requested.
- You can transfer your membership and change your home centre at any time, and doing so does not restart the commitment period or trigger another activation fee. This is the clause that matters most if you move, and it is in the contract rather than in a support article.
- Freeze is available for up to twelve full calendar months on the same five grounds, and it can be used even in the first three months of membership. Freezes taken on a qualifying ground cost nothing, and your commitment period is extended by the number of frozen months. A paid freeze exists as a fallback for anyone who does not qualify: ten pounds per month, capped at three months, payable upfront in full, and the general manager has the final say on approving it.
- The refund guarantee for online joins is real and specific. Section 11.1.1 gives you a statutory fourteen-day right of withdrawal from the date your membership starts, with a full refund of everything including the activation fee. A separate fourteen-day money back guarantee in section 12 is offered to first-time members and to existing members moving between centres, though they will only refund payments made once.
- Payment is straightforward. Membership fees are collected by direct debit on or around the first working day of each month, in advance. Joint and family memberships are a single direct debit rather than separate mandates per person.
- There is a no-commitment route. Their membership page describes the rolling monthly contract as "our no-commitment with a one-month notice period," payable by direct debit for a minimum of one month on a rolling continuous agreement.
- Genuine non-fitness facilities sit inside the membership rather than being bolted on: swimming pools which the brand places at "100+ locations nationwide," Reformer Pilates classes, sauna and steam rooms, and an on-site childcare nursery called Nuffy Bear Day Nurseries that takes children from three months to five years.
- Prices are at least stated somewhere. We could not find a single national membership price, because joining is priced per club, but the site does publish a joining fee band of "£19-39 joining fee, T&Cs and exclusions may apply," and family memberships from "just £6 per child." The joining fee has also been promoted to zero for a fixed window: the site read "no joining fee between 1 and 30 September 2026."
Operational Risks & Limitations
- The discounted tiers are twelve-month commitments and you cannot simply walk away from them. Sections 6.3.3 and 6.3.4 commit you to twelve full calendar months for a reduced rate, and the contract says so plainly: inside the commitment period you may not downgrade or cancel except on the grounds listed in section 11. The quarterly prepaid tier commits three full calendar months paid upfront (6.3.2). There is one escape route and it costs money: 11.5.2 allows you to cancel straight away "if you pay for the remaining full calendar months of your commitment period."
- We could not verify a single membership price. Clause 5.2 says Nuffield "will set out all amounts that you need to pay" on your membership agreement form, and the pound sign appears only twice in the whole 78,000-character contract, both times in the ten-pound freeze fee. Every monthly figure has to be obtained by entering your postcode on the join page, so any specific price you have seen quoted for Nuffield is a club-specific figure that may not apply to the branch nearest you.
- Discounted monthly does not automatically give you the cheapest available rate, and renewal is where the price can move. Section 6.3.4 states that the fees for the following twelve months may already have changed, and they say they will tell you before you renew. Section 14.2 is honest about the limits of their own commitment: "We will try not to change the fee more frequently than once in a calendar year, and to ensure that any change is reasonable, but we cannot guarantee this."
- Cancelling because of a price rise has its own procedure and still costs you money. Section 11.4 requires a discounted monthly member who objects to an increase to state in writing that they are cancelling because of the increase, requires them to keep paying the increased fee until the commitment period completes, and only settles the difference between old and new fees at the end of that period.
- Your membership can be frozen but you cannot use the clubs while it is frozen. Clause 10.7 states plainly that you will not be allowed to use any of their centres during a freeze. Clause 10.4 adds that a freeze cannot be backdated and no monthly fees paid before the freeze began are refunded. If prices rise while you are frozen, 10.6 has you paying the new price on resumption.
- Do not cancel your own direct debit. Clause 5.5 puts responsibility for cancelling the direct debit on you when your membership ends, and 8.4.1 says that cancelling the direct debit without giving notice leaves the account in arrears and the membership running to the end of the following month. Non-payment is treated seriously: 8.2.2, 8.3.2 and 8.4.2 each say that while you owe money you are not allowed to enter or use any centre and you still owe the fees for the rest of your commitment period; 8.5 reserves the right to use a debt collection agency and to recover legal costs and interest, or to take the money from your card.
- One missed payment can be treated as notice to cancel. Clause 8.3.3 reads: "If you are not in a commitment period with us, we will take the first month you fall into arrears as deemed notice to cancel your membership."
- Cancellation has to be in writing to the club, not online, and the proof is your problem. The dedicated page states "All cancellation requests need to be received in writing by your home gym." Clause 11.2.2 says that if you post or email a cancellation and do not receive an acknowledgement, "you must assume that we have not received your cancellation notice and you must contact us and send a further cancellation notice." Turning up at the desk and filling a form produces no acknowledgement letter at all; the end date is simply written on the form.
- They can cancel you without notice and can then bar you permanently. Clause 13.2 lets Nuffield freeze or terminate with no notice where a professional judgement is made that you cannot use facilities safely, where you seriously or repeatedly breach the membership conditions, where you let another person use your membership card unless you have reported it lost or stolen in writing, or where you use offensive or discriminatory language or threatening behaviour. Clause 13.3 then states that following a cancellation under 13.1 or 13.2, "we will not allow you to join any of our centres in the future and you will not be allowed to enter any of our centres," and section 16 confirms you can never restart. Clause 15.1 is the widest of all: "We operate private members clubs and membership is at the sole discretion of our management. We do not have to state or provide you with reasons for refusal of membership."
- You may not bring your own coach into the building. Clause 13.2.5 covers any guest providing, offering, carrying out, advertising or promoting an activity or service that competes with Nuffield, "including but not limited to personal training or other training, coaching or instruction to any individual or group." If you are a trainer who earns money coaching clients, that clause is one you need to read before you buy a membership.
- Force majeure exits immediately with no compensation. Clause 17.1 allows either side to cancel immediately by written notice if services are unavailable or significantly reduced for thirty consecutive days or more for reasons beyond their reasonable control, and states that by law they do not have to compensate you in that situation.
- Their commitment is real but it is not a promise about equipment or class quality. Nothing on the club pages, the membership pages, or the 78,000-character contract identifies a cardio or strength equipment manufacturer, so we cannot tell you what machines you will be on. The only equipment-brand traces we found were three URL slugs in their own sitemap, /technogym-excite, /technogym-render and /guiseley-technogym-render, which is not enough to state a supplier. We could not find any published class timetable beyond a link to a class finder, so claims about instructor qualifications or class fill rates cannot be checked against any source.
Risk Assessment
The risk with Nuffield is not that the gym is bad. It is that the price is invisible until you commit to a club and a twelve-month term. The commitment structure is the whole story: standard monthly rolls with one calendar month of notice and no minimum beyond that, while the discounted rates that most people are sold all require twelve full calendar months and can only be exited by paying off every remaining month. If the sales conversation does not tell you which of the two you are on, that is the single most important thing to establish before you hand over a direct debit mandate. The second-order risk is clause 13.2.5, which treats coaching anyone inside their buildings as a grounds for terminating membership without notice and permanently barring you from every centre; that catches people who would never think of themselves as a commercial threat to a gym. Third, if you move during a discounted term, clause 9 lets you transfer rather than start again, but your home club's price applies, so a transfer can raise the rate you pay. Finally, their member data is genuinely good and that is the reason to read the contract: nine defined early-exit grounds, a real fourteen-day refund, a transfer right, and a twelve-month freeze are more than most UK operators publish. We would still treat clause 15.1 and clause 13.3 as the governing reality of the relationship, because a private members club that can refuse without giving reasons can also terminate without notice for conduct it decides is disqualifying.
Buyer Recommendation
If you are in the UK and want a gym attached to a real healthcare organisation, Nuffield is differentiated by things other operators will not offer: swimming pools at what the brand calls 100+ locations, Reformer Pilates, saunas and steam rooms, on-site childcare from three months old, and the option to use an employer's Vitality discount to reduce the membership. Those facilities are the reason to choose it over a budget chain, and they are verifiable on their own site. The commercial terms reward planning rather than shopping around. If you are confident about staying in one area and want the flexibility, take the rolling monthly contract and accept the standard rate; clause 6.3.1 sets the minimum at a single full calendar month, and section 11.2.1 gives you an unambiguous end-date formula plus one free payment, which is about the best you will find. If a salesperson offers you twelve months at a reduced rate, the decision hinges on one question: could you still afford the discounted monthly fee if your income stopped tomorrow, and could you afford to pay off the remaining months if you wanted out early? Section 11.5.2 makes paying off the balance an explicitly available route, so treat the discounted rate as a loan rather than a saving. Read the Fair and Honest Contract before you sign, because it is reproduced as a poster in every club and the nine early-exit grounds are stronger than the marketing page suggests. Two things to do in week one: put a recurring calendar reminder on the first working day of each month to check your direct debit has gone out and is the correct amount, and read clauses 13.2.3, 13.2.5, 15.1 and 13.3 before you use the card with anyone else, before you coach anyone in the building, and before you accept any change in your membership type. For anyone outside the UK, none of this applies: the contract is UK-specific, prices are per club, and we found no evidence that the memberships are sold outside the UK.
Best For
- People who want swimming pools, saunas and steam as part of the membership rather than as an add-on, since the brand places pools at what it calls 100+ locations
- Parents who need on-site childcare on site, because Nuffy Bear Day Nurseries takes children from three months to five years inside the centres
- Anyone whose employer offers a Vitality gym discount, which Nuffield participates in and which applies to the standard monthly contract
- People who expect to move during their term, because clause 9 lets you change home centre at any time without restarting the commitment period or paying another activation fee
- Buyers who want a real membership contract to read rather than a sign-up funnel, since the Fitness & Wellbeing terms and conditions runs to over 78,000 characters and defines every mechanism
Ideal Buyer Profile
- Someone who has read their own membership agreement before signing and is comfortable binding themselves for twelve months only if the discount is large enough to be worth the lock-in
- A buyer who plans to use the health facilities rather than only the gym floor, since the pools, reformer Pilates, sauna and steam rooms, and nursery are the differentiators against a budget operator
- Someone who wants flexibility and will therefore choose the rolling monthly contract over the discounted rate, paying more per month in exchange for the one-calendar-month exit
- A household with children where one parent will use the nursery and the other the gym floor, since family memberships are a single direct debit and children are added from a published rate of just six pounds each
- Anyone who does not coach, train or advise other people for payment inside a gym, because clause 13.2.5 treats that as grounds for termination without notice and a permanent bar
- Buyers who live in the UK: the contract, the currency, the cooling-off rights and the Vitality discount are all UK-specific
Not Recommended For
- Anyone who wants to know the monthly cost before choosing a club, because Nuffield publishes no national price and clause 5.2 puts the amounts on the membership agreement form after you have selected a location
- Buyers who intend to cancel within a few months, because the discounted tiers bind twelve full calendar months and the only early exit is paying off every remaining month
- Anyone who is a personal trainer, coach or instructor, because clause 13.2.5 treats offering training, coaching or instruction to any individual or group inside a Nuffield centre as a disqualifying act
- People who share membership cards with family members or friends, because letting another person use your card is a no-notice termination ground under 13.2.3 unless the card was reported lost or stolen in writing, and 13.3 makes the consequence permanent
- Anyone who needs to cancel by phone or entirely online, because cancellations must be received in writing by the home gym and the burden of proving receipt sits with you under 11.2.2
- Members who expect price certainty across twelve months, since 14.2 says only that they will try not to change fees more than once a calendar year and cannot guarantee it
- Anyone who wants to use the clubs while frozen, because 10.7 states you will not be allowed to enter any centre during a freeze and 10.4 confirms fees already paid are not refunded
- Buyers who want equipment provenance, because no page we could reach names a cardio or strength equipment manufacturer
Competitive Positioning
Against PureGym and The Gym Group, which are budget operators, the difference is facilities rather than price: pools at what Nuffield calls 100+ locations, Reformer Pilates, sauna and steam, and an in-centre nursery for children from three months old. We could not verify a monthly price for Nuffield or for either budget chain from first-party sources, so we make no price comparison, and any figure circulating for Nuffield should be treated as specific to one postcode. On contract flexibility Nuffield publishes far more than its budget competitors do, and its nine early-exit grounds and at-any-time transfer right are the most concrete parts of the offer. Against David Lloyd Club, both are operator-owned estates rather than franchised, but David Lloyd's club format includes a broader racquet and spa proposition and we have not verified its membership terms, so we do not compare them. The comparison that is verifiable is against a single-club independent gym, where Nuffield's transfer-anytime right is worth more than a lower headline price because it removes the main risk of moving mid-term. For our broader equipment coverage, see our Life Fitness and Technogym pages, but note that Nuffield itself does not name its equipment suppliers on any page we could reach.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much notice does Nuffield Health require to cancel a gym membership?
One full calendar month, in those words, in both their Fair and Honest Contract page and clause 11 of the Fitness and Wellbeing terms and conditions. The contract then tells you how the month is counted: notice received on the first day of a month ends the membership on the last day of that same month, while notice received after the first day ends it on the last day of the following month, so one more direct debit is taken. Their worked example is that a notice received on 10 May takes effect on 30 June. Cancellations must be received in writing by your home gym, and clause 11.2.2 places the burden on you to send a further notice if you receive no acknowledgement. Can you cancel a Nuffield Health membership during a twelve-month commitment period?
Only on nine defined grounds, listed as clauses 11.3.1 to 11.3.9: pregnancy, serious illness, serious injury, moving more than five miles from any Nuffield centre, redundancy, an employer relocating your workplace more than five miles from a centre, Nuffield permanently closing your home centre, Nuffield refurbishing your centre closed for more than a month, and Nuffield significantly reducing your centre's opening hours or facilities. Proof may be requested. There is also a way out that costs money: clause 11.5.2 lets a discounted monthly member cancel straight away "if you pay for the remaining full calendar months of your commitment period." Source: nuffieldhealth.com/terms/fitness-and-wellbeing-terms-and-conditions, retrieved 5 October 2026.
How long can a Nuffield Health membership be frozen, and does it cost anything?
Up to twelve full calendar months, on five qualifying grounds: pregnancy, serious illness, serious injury, redundancy, and an employer relocating your workplace more than five miles away. Freezes on those grounds cost nothing, your commitment period is extended by the number of frozen months, and a freeze can be requested even within your first three months. There is also a paid fallback that does not qualify: ten pounds per month for a maximum of three months, payable upfront in full before the freeze applies, with no account arrears, no second freeze within three months, and the general manager holding final approval. Two things to know before you rely on it: clause 10.7 says you will not be allowed to use any of their centres while frozen, and 10.4 says a freeze cannot be backdated and fees already paid are not refunded. Source: nuffieldhealth.com/terms/fitness-and-wellbeing-terms-and-conditions, retrieved 5 October 2026.
How much does a Nuffield Health gym membership cost per month?
We could not verify a national figure, and that is the honest answer rather than an omission. Clause 5.2 says Nuffield "will set out all amounts that you need to pay" on your membership agreement form, and the pound sign appears only twice in the whole contract, both times in the ten-pound freeze fee. Membership is priced per club and is obtained by entering your postcode on their join page, so any price quoted for Nuffield is specific to one branch. The two figures the site does publish are a joining fee band of "£19-39 joining fee, T&Cs and exclusions may apply" and family membership from "just £6 per child," plus a current promotion reading "no joining fee between 1 and 30 September 2026." Our brand pages cover Life Fitness and Technogym, but Nuffield does not name an equipment supplier on any page we could reach.
Does Nuffield Health publish a notice period for cancelling online?
There is a statutory fourteen-day right of withdrawal for anyone who joined online, and it is worth taking. Clause 11.1.1 measures the fourteen days from the date your membership starts rather than the date you enrolled, and provides a full refund of everything paid including the activation fee. A separate fourteen-day money back guarantee in section 12 is offered to first-time members and to existing members moving between centres, but clause 12.1 makes clear that Nuffield "will only refund any payments made once" and that this guarantee is separate from the online right. Membership bought in a club rather than online does not use the withdrawal right and falls under the section 12 guarantee instead. Source: nuffieldhealth.com/terms/fitness-and-wellbeing-terms-and-conditions, retrieved 5 October 2026.
Can Nuffield Health cancel a membership without notice?
Yes, and the consequence is permanent. Clause 13.2 lets them freeze or terminate with no notice where a professional judgement is made that you cannot use facilities safely, where you seriously or repeatedly breach the membership conditions, where you let another person use your membership card unless you reported it lost or stolen in writing, or where you use offensive or discriminatory language or threatening behaviour. Clause 13.3 then states that after a cancellation under 13.1 or 13.2 "we will not allow you to join any of our centres in the future and you will not be allowed to enter any of our centres," and section 16 confirms a cancelled membership can never be restarted. Clause 13.2.5 also covers you or any guest providing, offering, carrying out, advertising or promoting any competing activity or service, "including but not limited to personal training or other training, coaching or instruction to any individual or group." Clause 15.1 is the widest statement of discretion: "We operate private members clubs and membership is at the sole discretion of our management. We do not have to state or provide you with reasons for refusal of membership." Source: nuffieldhealth.com/terms/fitness-and-wellbeing-terms-and-conditions, retrieved 5 October 2026.
