Equinox publishes club-level Join Terms rather than one national membership agreement, and that is the first thing to understand about buying here: the contract that binds you is the one for the club you joined, so the figures below come from a single named club’s document and may differ from your own copy. Equinox’s own FAQ says as much — “Notice periods vary by state and in some states, there may be additional cancellation methods available.”
The club does not publish a club count or a price list on the pages we could read, so neither appears here.
What matters when choosing Equinox
Cancellation runs on two separate clocks, not one. After the Initial Period you may cancel “upon thirty (30) days’ prior written notice to Equinox”, and the agreement then states that “your cancellation will go into effect thirty (30) days after Equinox receives your cancellation notice”. Thirty days to trigger it, another thirty days for it to take effect.
The Initial Period renews itself unless you tell it not to. “if you do not notify Equinox at least 30 days prior to the expiration of your Initial Period, your membership and this Agreement will automatically renew at the end of the Initial Period on a continuous month-to-month basis”. That notice is a non-renewal notice and is separate from the cancellation notice above — missing the first one is what creates the month-to-month obligation the second one then has to unwind.
Ending early is capped, not open-ended. During the Initial Period “Equinox may charge you a reasonable cancellation fee, not to exceed 10% of the outstanding Membership Dues for the remainder of your Initial Period or fifty dollars ($50), whichever is less”.
The initiation fee is never returned. “any initiation fee you paid will not be refunded”. Treat it as spent at the moment you sign, whatever happens afterwards.
A freeze is capped at two months, and a non-medical one costs money. Section 1.4 lets Equinox “temporarily suspend or ‘freeze’ your account for up to two (2) months, or longer for medically-necessitated freezes”, but “Non-medical freezes are subject to an additional fee”, and “Equinox reserves the right to modify its freeze policy from time to time at its sole discretion”.
Dues can be raised on notice. “After the Initial Period, Equinox may, in its discretion, increase or otherwise modify your Membership Dues, upon at least thirty (30) days’ notice to you.”
It is not transferable. “1.5 Non-Transferable: Your Membership is personal to you and is non-transferable and non-descendible. Only you may use your Membership.”
Your Home Club is the club you bought at. “Your “Home Club” is the Club at which your Membership was purchased and is listed at the beginning of this Agreement.” Access beyond it is a tier question, not a membership question.
Three grounds are documented for ending the agreement early, each with evidence. Section 3.2 covers death, being “unable to use or receive all services contracted for by reason of disability, as evidenced by a signed letter from your doctor”, and moving “more than twenty-five (25) miles from any Club operated by Equinox”. Where they apply, the refund covers “any prepaid unused Membership Dues and any prepaid unused Ancillary Charges, less any outstanding Membership dues”.
Money is separated in a way the headline price hides. The structure is an initiation fee, an annual fee, and monthly dues. The initiation fee is never refunded and the dues figure is what rises on thirty days’ notice — so ask for each of the three separately, in writing, rather than reading the advertised monthly number as the whole cost.
The tier names are the brand’s own. Equinox’s published membership material names Select, All-Access and Destination. That is brand-reported positioning rather than our assessment, and what each tier includes is set by the club document, not by us.
Before you join
- Ask which document governs your membership: the Join Terms for your club, with a copy in your hand before you sign.
- Write down both dates — the last day to give non-renewal notice, and the day cancellation would take effect after you give notice. They are thirty days apart.
- Ask what an early-exit would cost during your Initial Period, and confirm the cap in your own copy.
- Ask for the initiation fee, the annual fee and the monthly dues as three separate figures, and for the stated notice period for a dues increase.

The scores here are our editorial assessments, entered by hand from published manufacturer specifications and market sources. We do not operate gyms, test equipment, or hold device telemetry.
✓ Strategic Strengths
- We hold no sourced strengths list for this brand. This is a gap in our record, not a finding: the strengths of a brand that publishes no specification sheet, no warranty schedule and no price list cannot be asserted from a record we do not have.
! Operational Risks
- We hold no sourced risks list for this brand. We have not audited it, so we are not going to report that we found nothing: an empty record is not a clean result.
