Assumptions

  • • Annual maintenance % of CAPEX: 3.0%
  • • Energy consumption: 1500 kWh/unit/year
  • • Energy cost: $0.15/kWh
  • • Analysis period: 5 years

Limitations

  • • Linear cost model — Maintenance and energy costs are modeled as flat annual amounts (no inflation, no usage variance).
  • • Energy consumption is an estimate — Based on benchmark averages per equipment type; actual consumption depends on usage hours and model.

Data sources & method

This tool is a calculation model, not a database lookup. It runs arithmetic on the numbers you enter, using an explicit formula and a small set of documented default assumptions (service intervals, energy prices, useful life). Every assumption it applies is listed in the result, and each one is a default you can overwrite.

We do not hold a benchmark dataset. FitnessNav operates no gyms, runs no fleet, and has never collected equipment telemetry, so there is no measured useful-life, maintenance-rate or downtime distribution behind these models. The default assumptions come from published manufacturer documentation and standard trade practice, and they are labelled as assumptions \u2014 not as findings. Treat the output as a structured way to think about a decision, and replace every default with your own numbers before it leaves your desk. If a vendor hands you a benchmark, ask for the sample size and the age of the machines in it.

Equipment TCO Calculator — frequently asked questions

What does TCO include for gym equipment?

Purchase price (tier-adjusted), maintenance at the percentage this model assumes for your equipment category, and electricity at $0.15/kWh using the manufacturer's annual kWh rating — all spread over the useful life the model assumes.

What if no energy data exists for my equipment?

The model falls back to an industry default of 1,500 kWh/year for powered machines, which is conservative for strength equipment and realistic for older cardio.

Why does tier change total cost so much?

Budget-tier units are benchmarked at 65% of list price and premium at 160% — the same treadmill spans $7,800 to $19,200 across tiers before running costs.

Can I compare different lifespans fairly?

Yes — all costs are annualized over useful life, so a 15-year dumbbell rack and an 8-year treadmill can be compared on cost per year rather than sticker price.
