Asset Performance Matrix
We do not hold per-dimension scores for Oura. Every dimension reads the same number in our records, which means the value was never assessed rather than that all six came out equal, so we show nothing rather than a number we cannot stand behind.
Verdict
A subscription-first health wearable rather than a fitness device. The ring is the sensor; the product is the $5.99 per month membership that turns those sensors into the scores people actually buy the ring for. We find the hardware claims check out against Oura's own published specifications, with two honest caveats that the marketing pages blur over. First, the battery figure appears in two different forms on the same page: the Oura Ring 5 product page headlines one week of battery life from a single charge, while its own specification table says one charge lasts up to 6-9 days depending on ring size and usage. The older Oura Ring 4 Ceramic is listed at 5-8 days. Take the specification table, not the headline. Second, the accuracy claims are real comparisons with named methodology, but they are Oura's own numbers, not an independent audit: on its science page Oura reports heart rate r-squared of 98% and heart rate variability r-squared of 94% against ECG, ovulation detection at 79% against ovulation prediction kits, and sleep tracking at 99% "compared to clinical polysomnography at 83%". The sleep staging validation behind the headline figure traces to a 2021 peer-reviewed paper that classifies sleep in two stages, not the four stages used in clinical sleep medicine. We have not run any of these devices ourselves and we do not have the underlying datasets.
Market Position
Smart ring with no screen and no GPS. Hardware $399-$499 plus a mandatory $5.99/month membership.
What Distinguishes This Brand
A continuously worn sensor in a form people keep on overnight, with a published research trail behind it. The ring has no display, so it produces data rather than feedback, and it is built around sleep, readiness, stress and women's health metrics rather than workout analytics. The membership page lists over 50 metrics across sleep and rest, heart health, activity and movement, stress, women's health and metabolic health, including Cardiovascular Age, Cardio Capacity, Resilience, Cumulative Stress, Sleep debt, Sleep regularity, Body Clock and Cycle day. Oura also states the ring integrates with more than 100 apps, syncs temperature data automatically with Natural Cycles, and can be used with Flo and Clue. Everything except the raw sensor feed depends on an active membership.
Strategic Strengths
- Published specifications are unusually complete for a wearable: the Oura Ring 5 page lists 6.09 mm width, 2.28 mm thickness, weight from 2 grams, a high-performance titanium exterior with a seamless titanium interior, water resistance up to 100 m / 328 ft with an IP68 rating for water and dust, Bluetooth Low Energy, and automatic firmware updates through the app.
- The sensor suite is named rather than implied. Oura states that red and infrared LEDs measure blood oxygen levels while you sleep, that green and infrared LEDs alternate to measure heart rate, heart rate variability and respiration rate continuously, that a digital sensor measures temperature trends, and that an accelerometer tracks movement and activity around the clock.
- A genuine published research record, in the sense that third parties have used the device. Oura's science page names the Journal of Medical Internet Research, Sensors and Sleep Medicine as venues where the ring's sensing has been independently validated, and states that Oura Ring data has powered research published in over 130 peer-reviewed publications. Named examples include a Sensors 2024 study on predicting postoperative pain outcomes in orthopedic patients and a 2024 study of elevated body temperature and depressive symptoms.
- Warranty terms are published and specific. Oura warrants new products free from material defects in material and workmanship for one year from the date of delivery, and refurbished products for ninety days from the date of delivery, with the term extended where local law requires it.
- Returns are structured rather than discretionary. The Oura support documentation gives a 30-day window from receipt, covers ring sets in full (ring, charger and USB-C cable), and provides a prepaid return label through a self-serve portal in seven countries: the US, Australia, Canada, Finland, Germany, Japan and the UK.
- The membership is cheap relative to the category and the entry point is genuinely free: $5.99 per month, and a first month free for new members, with Oura stating no payment information is collected until after the trial ends.
- The Ring 5 charges in about 80 minutes, and a separately sold charging case is stated to add a day of charge in ten minutes.
Operational Risks & Limitations
- The subscription is what makes the device useful, and stopping it removes most of the value. Oura's own membership page states that if you cancel, your ring and app will still function but the insights, personal health data and benefits you receive will be much more limited. This is a lock-in by design, not by accident.
- The cancellation rule is tight. The terms require cancellation at least one day before your renewal date to avoid the next charge, and cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing cycle with access retained until then. If you cancel after the cut-off you pay another month.
- No money comes back. The terms state you are not entitled to a refund of any previously paid fees, whether full or pro-rated, and that you will not receive a refund for the current subscription term you paid for. Refunds and credits are granted at Oura's sole and absolute discretion.
- Six months of inactivity is a termination trigger. The terms reserve the right to terminate the subscription and cancel pending purchases after six months or more without logging in or using the services, refunding only the purchase price of the product and not the value of the subscription.
- Warranty shipping costs fall on you. Oura repairs or replaces components that fail during the warranty period at no charge for the part, but the terms state you are responsible for the related shipping charges. The remedy is also at Oura's discretion: repair, replacement or a full refund, at their election, rather than your choice.
- Refurbished units get ninety days, not a year. If you buy a refurbished ring you are on a three-month clock, and consumable parts such as batteries are excluded from warranty unless they are materially defective.
- No screen and no GPS. There is no display on the ring itself and no satellite positioning, so it cannot tell you where you ran. It is not a substitute for a GPS watch.
- Fit is a prerequisite. You need a sizing kit first, and the retailer, not Oura, handles returns for units bought through a third-party seller.
- Exchanges are limited. The support documentation states directly that Oura cannot process returns or exchanges for Gen3 purchases, that exchanges are limited to the same model in a different size, and that each item is allowed only one return or exchange. Warranty replacements are not eligible for return or refund.
Risk Assessment
The main risk on this page is not a broken product, it is that the accuracy story is self-reported by the company selling the ring. The four headline numbers on Oura's science page (heart rate r-squared 98%, HRV r-squared 94%, ovulation detection 79%, sleep tracking 99% at 83% agreement with polysomnography) are Oura's comparisons against devices and kits it selected, and the sleep staging claim resolves to a 2021 paper classifying two sleep stages rather than the four used in clinical practice. The heart rate and HRV figures carry a footnote marker for a source that did not resolve in our crawl, so we cannot name the study behind them. On the regulatory side the exposure is narrow and clearly stated: Oura states plainly that its services are not a medical device, are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, mitigate or prevent any disease, and cannot replace a physician. The single regulated feature is the Fertile Window inside Cycle Insights, CE marked under Regulation (EU) 2017/745 with Oura Health Oy of Oulu, Finland as legal manufacturer, and Oura states it is not intended for use as contraception and must not be relied on to prevent pregnancy. We have not verified the competitor product plans our previous file on this brand asserted, so we are not repeating them here.
Buyer Recommendation
Buy the ring if your reason is sleep and recovery insight rather than workout tracking, and if you are comfortable with a $5.99 per month charge that has to stay active for the scores to keep updating. Check three things before you order. Read the specification table rather than the headline: one charge is listed as up to 6-9 days for the Ring 5 and 5-8 days for the Ring 4 Ceramic. Decide whether the $5.99 is a subscription you will remember to cancel, because the terms only spare you the next charge if you cancel at least one day before renewal and nothing is refunded afterwards. And send the ring back within 30 days if the sizing is wrong, using the prepaid label, because exchanges are limited to the same model in a different size and Gen3 purchases cannot be exchanged at all. If you want a screen, GPS, or a device that measures anything about your training, this is the wrong category and a GPS watch is the cheaper answer.
Best For
- People whose primary question is about sleep, recovery or stress rather than training load, and who are willing to wear a ring to bed every night.
- Buyers who want the underlying numbers rather than a coaching subscription: the ring exposes heart rate, heart rate variability, respiration rate, blood oxygen and temperature trends, and the Oura support documentation lets you export your data as CSV from the Membership Hub even without an active subscription.
- Anyone who has decided against a wrist-worn screen and wants a device with no display, no notifications and no charging every single day.
- Readers who care that a wearable has been used in published research. Oura names the Journal of Medical Internet Research, Sensors and Sleep Medicine as independent validation venues and states that Oura Ring data has powered over 130 peer-reviewed publications.
Ideal Buyer Profile
- Someone who already tracks sleep with a phone app and has decided they want continuous overnight sensing rather than spot measurements from a wrist device.
- A buyer who will set a recurring-calendar reminder for the membership renewal, because the terms only avoid the next charge if cancellation happens at least one day before the renewal date.
- A buyer in the United States, Australia, Canada, Finland, Germany, Japan or the United Kingdom, who can use the prepaid self-serve return portal rather than emailing support.
- Someone comfortable with wellness-grade readings rather than diagnostic ones. Oura states its services are for wellness and informational purposes only and cannot replace a physician, and its single CE-marked feature is the Fertile Window, which is not intended as contraception.
Not Recommended For
- Anyone whose question is where and how far they trained. There is no GPS and no screen; the accelerometer tracks movement and activity, which is not the same thing.
- Buyers who want a one-time purchase. The scores and insights stop being meaningful when the membership lapses, and no part of the current term is refunded if you cancel late.
- Anyone who needs medical-grade readings. The company states outright that its services are not a medical device and are not intended to diagnose or treat any condition.
- Buyers who need contraception. Oura states the Fertile Window must not be relied on to prevent pregnancy, and that contraception is provided by a separate third party, Natural Cycles, under its own terms.
- Refurbished-ring buyers who want the same cover as new. Refurbished units carry ninety days instead of one year, and warranty shipping is paid by the buyer in both cases.
- Gen3 owners hoping to exchange rather than return, or anyone planning more than one return or exchange on the same item.
Competitive Positioning
We describe this ring only against facts we could verify on Oura's own pages, because the comparison table our previous file carried had no sources behind it. On price, the Oura Ring 5 store page lists $399 for Silver and Black and $499 for Gold, Deep Rose, Stealth and Brushed Silver, and the membership is a single tier at $5.99 per month with a first month free; HSA and FSA funds are accepted. On hardware, the ring has no display and no GPS, waterproof to 100 m with an IP68 rating, 6.09 mm wide and 2.28 mm thick from 2 grams, and a stated charge time of about 80 minutes, with a separately sold case adding a day in ten minutes. On data, the ring measures heart rate, heart rate variability, respiration rate, blood oxygen and temperature trends continuously and carries an accelerometer, and Oura states it exports to CSV and integrates with more than 100 apps. On paper, new product warranty is one year and refurbished is ninety days, and the returns window is 30 days from receipt with self-serve prepaid labels in seven countries. For the one product in this category we have separately verified end to end, see our WHOOP review, which is a screen-less band with its own membership rather than a ring. We are deliberately not restating the competitor pricing and product-roadmap claims our earlier version of this page made, because we did not verify them against the manufacturers' own pages.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the Oura Ring battery actually last?
Two figures appear for the same product and the specification table is the one to trust. The Oura Ring 5 product page is headlined as one week of battery life from a single charge, while its own specification table states that one charge lasts up to 6-9 days of battery life depending on ring size and usage. The older Oura Ring 4 Ceramic page lists 5-8 days. Oura's footnote on both pages says battery life and longevity depend on ring size, app settings, feature configuration, activity, battery age and usage, and that battery tests were conducted across various sizes and scenarios.
Do you have to pay a subscription to use the Oura Ring?
The membership is $5.99 per month and the first month is free for new members. Oura's membership page states plainly that if you cancel, your ring and app still function but the insights, personal health data and benefits you receive will be much more limited. You can still export your data as CSV from the Membership Hub without an active subscription. Cancellation has to happen at least one day before your renewal date to avoid the next charge, it takes effect at the end of the current billing cycle, and the terms state you are not entitled to a refund of previously paid fees, full or pro-rated, nor of the current term you paid for.
Is the sleep and heart rate accuracy on the Oura Ring independently verified?
The comparisons are published, but they are Oura's own numbers and we have not independently verified them. On its science page Oura reports heart rate r-squared of 98% and heart rate variability r-squared of 94% against ECG, ovulation detection at 79% against ovulation prediction kits, and sleep tracking at 99% compared to clinical polysomnography at 83%. The sleep staging work behind that figure resolves to Altini M, Kinnunen H, 'The Promise of Sleep: A Multi-Sensor Approach for Accurate Sleep Stage Detection Using Oura Ring', Sensors 2021; 21(13):4302, which is a peer-reviewed two-stage sleep classification rather than the four-stage model used in clinical sleep medicine. The footnote marker attached to the heart rate and HRV figures did not resolve to a source in our crawl, so we cannot name the study behind them. We have not tested the device.
What is the Oura Ring warranty and who pays for shipping?
The terms warrant new products free from material defects in material and workmanship for one year from the date of delivery, and refurbished products for ninety days from the date of delivery, extending the term where local law requires. During that period Oura will repair, or replace if repair is not feasible, components that fail, at no charge for the component, but the terms state you are responsible for the related shipping charges. Oura retains the exclusive right to choose between repair, replacement or a full refund. Exclusions include normal wear and tear, consumable parts such as batteries, failure to follow instructions, accident or abuse, unauthorised disassembly or modification, and use of non-Oura apps or software.
How do returns work, and can I exchange instead?
The support documentation gives 30 days from receiving your original order, for any reason, on a fully functional and undamaged product, and ring sets must be returned complete: ring, charger and USB-C cable. Self-serve returns with a prepaid label are available in the United States, Australia, Canada, Finland, Germany, Japan and the United Kingdom; returns from Russia cannot be processed, and other regions must contact support. Exchanges are limited to the same model in a different size, Oura states it is unable to offer exchanges for Gen3 purchases, each item is allowed only one return or exchange, and warranty replacements are not eligible for return or refund. Original shipping, handling and any customs fees are non-refundable. You should cancel the membership in app settings or the Membership Hub before returning, or billing continues. Oura also had a live fulfilment notice dated 27 September 2026 saying some US and Canadian orders may take up to five days longer than expected to ship and arrive.
Is the Oura Ring a medical device?
Oura states that its services are not a medical device, are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, mitigate or prevent any disease or medical condition, and are for wellness and informational purposes only and cannot replace the services of physicians. The one regulated feature is the Fertile Window inside Cycle Insights, which is CE marked under Regulation (EU) 2017/745 with Oura Health Oy, Elektroniikkatie 10, 90590 Oulu, Finland as legal manufacturer, and is intended as an aid in ovulation prediction to facilitate conception. Oura states it is not intended for use as contraception and must not be relied on to prevent pregnancy, and that contraception is provided by a separate third party, Natural Cycles.
A small team cannot hand-write a page for every brand we track, so this one is generated from the same record the scores come from. It summarises that record and reports nothing we measured.
✓ Strategic Strengths
- We hold no sourced strengths list for this brand. This is a gap in our record, not a finding: the strengths of a brand that publishes no specification sheet, no warranty schedule and no price list cannot be asserted from a record we do not have.
! Operational Risks
- We hold no sourced risks list for this brand. We have not audited it, so we are not going to report that we found nothing: an empty record is not a clean result.
